Panelists will discuss a favorite cinematography exercise, explain what content it teaches, and show examples of the resulting student work. John Bruner will discuss an exercise where students build a story around commonly used yet tricky to execute dolly movement, taking into account focus and depth of field considerations. Lance Clark will discuss an exercise in which student recreate a scene from a feature film or TV show, recreating it as close to the original as possible. Laurie Lee will present an exercise that can be executed live in the classroom or remotely, where students interpret a script and create a shooting script including shot list, lining shots and blocking, then direct the 2-scene dramatic dialogue. Ron Johnson will explain how he uses “one-shot” and “five by five” video exercises shot on smartphones to begin an editing aesthetics conversation.
